DOCTORS are ready to begin vaccinating their patients in Oxford against coronavirus.

Manor Surgery GP Dr Joe McManners told the Oxford Mail yesterday arrangements were still in place for jabs to go ahead at Barton Community Centre on Friday, despite appointments by other practices in the city being cancelled.

The site will be a local hub and marks wave two of the GP-led rollout of the jab.

GPs in Abingdon, Chipping Norton and Henley have already started to administer vaccinations this week. Dr McManners said: "We haven't received the vaccine yet but that's to be expected."

It is understood other hubs in the city will also be begin vaccinations this week, but this has not been confirmed by the NHS.

Around 1,000 over-80s are set to receive their injections at the Barton centre, getting the first dose of the Pfizer jab.

There had also been plans to vaccinate this weekend at Cherwell School but they have been scrapped.

An NHS spokesperson for the South East region, said: “This is a huge logistical challenge for the NHS and sites will start vaccinating once everything is in place to be able to deliver the vaccine safely.

"Thanks to the hard work of GPs, nurses, pharmacists and other primary care staff, sites across the South East have begun vaccinating vulnerable patients.”
