Husband and wife pub owners have found success in during Covid with a new takeaway menu.

Bill and Carmel Sheehan have been the owners of The Wheatsheaf in East Hendred near Didcot for 10 years, and to keep the business running during the pandemic, the couple decided to offer their customers takeaway food.

Mr Sheehan said: “Back in March when the lockdown just started, I thought what are we going to do? I did not want to sit upstairs and do nothing, so we decided that we would look into doing takeaways.”

The pub’s regular customers loved the idea of takeaway pub classics every day for lunch and dinner, and one man left a shining review.

Mr Sheehan said the takeaways have been “very successful” and he intends to keep on doing them.

The takeaway menu is "reasonably priced" and cheaper than the regular menu, it offers meals such as Sunday Roasts and fish and chips on a Friday.

Mr and Mrs Sheehan also have a Christmas special. From next week The Wheatsheaf will be serving a two-course takeaway turkey dinner and it will also be available on Christmas Day.

The turkey dinner will be available for people to collect and Mr Sheehan is also hoping to deliver the food to vulnerable people in the village on Christmas Day.

The takeaway menu helped the pub have an income throughout 2020, but it is not something Mr and Mrs Sheehan planned ever to do as pub owners.

Mr Sheehan said: “After being in this trade for such a long time, I never thought the day would come that I would start doing takeaways. It is one of these things and you have to adapt.”

He added: “It has snowballed into a nice little business.”

To enjoy the Wheatsheaf takeaway food customers are asked to call up in advance and book a time slot for collection. On arrival the food will be ready to take away and eat.
