A FILMMAKER has seen his movie released on Amazon Prime – almost 15 years since the project began.

Allistair Mitchell shot most of A Second Son in Cassington, with other location shoots in Banbury and Enstone.

The film, a fictional docudrama, follows the events of 15-year-old schoolgirl Emily Turner’s immaculate pregnancy and the Government handling of what may be the second coming.

Mr Mitchell produced and directed the low-budget indie movie in 2012.

“Back in 2006 and 2007, I was putting together a big film deal and had all the financial bits in place but then with the banking crisis it all fell apart,” he said.

“In 2012, we came back with a really small plan and was offered funding for it by investors.

“However the money only stretched to film in one location which was a farm just outside Cassington.

“At the end of the 13-day shoot, we packed up and it was sent to a distributor in the US which then also crashed.

“It was a nightmare, and it got stuck in limbo with the company, and it looked like it was lost.

“Then, the new company buying the assets of the old one got in touch 18 months ago and expressed an interest, so we then had to do a lot re-editing.”

Following that came the momentous news that Amazon Prime had taken on the film and would be streaming it.

“Now Amazon has picked it up, it shows if you stick with something, you can do whatever you want,” said Mr Mitchell.

“I was pleasantly surprised and very pleased, all the hard work and never giving up when a lot of people thought it was dead in the water has come together.

“In the film industry, getting on Netflix and Amazon Prime, they’re the two biggest platforms globally.

“I’ve been talking to people I know in film producing and they’ve said Amazon Prime don’t tend to take things.

“It was a tough gig, it’s tough for all independent filmmakers in Britain – newcomers getting into the industry is a really tough job.

“Indepedent film is all about getting help from others.”

The film draws on Emily’s private video diary and is intercut with covert footage, revealing ‘a conspiracy of denial at the highest levels’.

Principal photography for the 87-minute film took place in Cassington, on a £100,000 budget.

Mr Mitchell, who was born in Canada and now lives in Wroxton near Banbury, used to run a marketing agency in Oxfordshire for 10 years, before then writing a children’s book and moving into the film industry and putting together the finances for A Second Son.

The film can be found on Amazon Prime and rented for £3.49.

Viewers can alternatively watch A Second Son through a 30-day free trial on the streaming website.
