Three Hazel trees have been planted at a nature reserve in memory of a former Long Wittenham family.

The planting was organised by family member Edwin Heywood who lives in Adelaide, Australia.

With the help of the Earth Trust, the trees were Planted near the Clumps in Little Wittenham Wood.

The planting was in memory of his late wife Elizabeth Wrench, known as Betty who lived in Long Wittenham. The trees are also in memory of Elizabeth’s father Edward, his wife Caroline and their son Danny Wrench. Mr Heywood added another tree for himself.

Earth Trust’s head of land management Chris Parker planted the trees and family members Martin Wrench and his sister Karen Dodds, both from Blewbury, were also present at the planting ceremony.

Mr Heywood said: “Without the Wrench family I wouldn’t have met Betty and raised a family both in the UK and in Australia. They deserve to be remembered and a plot near to the famous Wittenham Clumps land mark is close to where the family lived and enjoyed.

“My thanks to the people of Long Wittenham for opening their doors and hearts to shelter a family fleeing from the blitz with only the clothes they wore and what they could carry”.
