A WOMAN was rushed to hospital after a blaze broke out on the first floor of her home last night.

Firefighters and ambulance crews were called to Buzzards Rise, Didcot, at 7.10pm, after a neighbour heard the smoke alarm sounding and then saw smoke coming from the property.

When the four crews from Didcot, Wallingford and Abingdon arrived at the scene, they were faced with high flames and thick smoke.

Six firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered into the house to tackle the fire and stop it from spreading.

They rescued one woman, who was brought out and passed over to South Central Ambulance Service and later taken to hospital.

The cause of the blaze is yet unknown but Oxfordshire Fire & Rescue Service are conducting an investigation with Thames Valley Police.

Station manager Paul Webster commented: "On arrival crews was faced with a severe fire in the property and information from the neighbour saying the lady was still in.

"The initial breathing apparatus crews worked incredibly hard to rescue the casualty and bring the fire under control in very difficult conditions."

Mr Webster pointed out that the resident was 'very lucky' she had a working smoke alarm, that alerted the neighbour who called 999.
