AN OXFORDSHIRE MP has written to the Health Secretary to say GPs in her constituency have ‘very real fears’ for their finances with the burden a mass vaccination programme will bring.

Liberal Democrat MP for Oxford West and Abingdon, Layla Moran, wrote to Matt Hancock and called for clarity on what upfront guarantee of payments will be given to GPs.

Her letter comes after speaking to a GP in her regular constituency surgery, and wrote to Mr Hancock as she was alarmed by what she heard.

Ms Moran said: “Firstly I want to thank the GP who spoke to me in my surgery about this. This is all about clarity and reassurance from the Government, so that our GPs can plan ahead.

“They’re small, agile businesses with few financial reserves, and they’re rightly worried for their future.

“I hope Matt Hancock will be able to offer the reassurance they need as soon as possible.

“I will continue to work with the local Clinical Commissioning Group and NHS trusts to support their work preparing for the mass vaccination programme, and I’m calling on central government to give clarity and reassurance where it’s needed.”

Ms Moran also raised the issue of doctors being burned out from the first wave, and concern that being asked to deliver all their normal work alongside coronavirus vaccinations will be problematic.

According to The Guardian, hospitals in England have been told to prepare for the first deliveries of the Pfizer vaccine as soon as December 7.
