Oxford, along with the rest of England, went into a second lockdown on Thursday. When the city first locked down in March streets were deserted.

This time we found a more divided city with Westgate and other city centre streets practically empty, but Cornmarket Street still full of shoppers.

Here’s what readers thought of day one of lockdown two...

Bridget Catterall: “Looked very different to day to the first lockdown. Today a little like a quiet Sunday.”

Amanda Jane Adams: “Lot of ‘non essential’ shops still open... no difference at all.

“I can see this going on longer than four weeks at this rate.”

Will Bayliss: “Retail park was dead. Only staff cars and work vans.”

Sandra McDonagh: “The only people milling about will be students as usual no social distancing and no masks either!”

Stephen Easter: “I can’t see this lockdown working seems the same with schools open lots of shops still open government got it wrong again.”

Mc Nicole: “Not me, went ONCE in September for birthday treat, but since lockdown in March 2020 I haven’t been in town, aka once in nine months.”

Michelle French: “Only certain businesses were open last time now pretty much everyone is allowed to go to work, school and college so no difference to the traffic on the roads.

“Not really a lockdown.”

Gaynor Sophie: “Went to the retail park in Abingdon every shop was open even the carpet and bed shops since when have those been classed as essential .... nothing is different at all still just as busy.”

Steven Jennings: "Going to work this morning the roads were the same as before lockdown I had to laugh to myself thinking this is different from the first one.”

Vicky Barker: “A40 was busy at 7.45am this morning.”

Gemma Jayne Stewart: “I won’t even tell you what it was like at about 9.30-9.45pm when I was coming down Magdalen bridge for my break.”

Tina Kingston: “Cowley Road was just as busy if not more so don’t think everyone’s getting it makes me so angry.”

Catherine Rees-Lay: “I’m surprised - the A44 was far quieter when we walked over it at about 8am than it has been recently.”

Graeme Mcmillan: “This will have no impact on infection rate, then we will get full lockdown in December and ruin Christmas.”

Tyrone Ross: “If our own government aren’t sticking to the rules then why should we, they haven’t got a clue what’s going on.”

Lina Ogbonna: “Westgate was empty.”

Mowgli Hughes: “Everyone is sticking to it.”

Sarah Williams: “Sadly the gyms are still closed. Ironic that six per cent of cases have come from gyms, 10 per cent from pubs/restaurants and 12 per cent from supermarkets!

“I’m sure the gym with social distancing, regularly cleaning is far safer than a toy shop with kids touching everything!”

Ali Moore: “Hairdressers, beauty places etc shut less risk there than popping to supermarket...pure madness.”

Reid Tutty: "Nice to see people not letting the lockdown keeping them down."
