A TODDLER was hit and knocked over by a Deliveroo cyclist travelling at 'high speed' in Cowley.

The incident happened on Oxford Road, near Marsh Road, Cowley, on Monday.

The two-year-old's mother, Stephanie, posted on Oxford Community Facebook page about the accident.

The post said: "Was anyone on Oxford Road near Marsh Road at 5.15pm this evening? At the pedestrian crossing outside the Ahulul Bayat centre?
"A Deliveroo cyclist ran a red light at high speed as I was crossing with my 2-year old daughter, and he hit her and knocked her down.

"We shouted at him to stop and alterted him to the fact he had hit a child, but he cycled away without checking if she was alright.

"Have already reported to the police, and Deliveroo, but am searching for any witnesses who saw what happened.

"Thankfully my daughter is ok, but she could have easily been badly hurt."

Stephanie told the Oxford Mail: "We were shocked - it was dark, we didn’t see him coming at all, and it was a red traffic light - I’ve been teaching my toddler for months that it’s only safe to cross the road when the green man is there, and now even that isn’t safe, which really scares me.

"I want cyclists to know that it’s not ok to run red lights ever, especially in winter when it is dark and people crossing the road can’t see them coming.

"We were very lucky my daughter wasn’t killed, she could easily have been, and it was even more shocking that he didn’t stop to see if she was ok.

"However I would like to add that Deliveroo escalated my complaint immediately, conducted an internal investigation and within 24 hours had identified the rider and taken action.

"They were extremely professional and I don’t blame them as a company at all.

"I really hope he, and all other cyclists in Oxford really think hard about obeying traffic rules and stopping for red lights as it really could have been a devastating accident."

A spokesperson for Deliveroo said: "This was a shocking incident. We are carrying out an urgent and full investigation."

They added that Deliveroo took immediate action to suspend the rider who they believed was invovled whilst they carry out the full investigation.

Thames Valley Police said they could confirm that the incident had been reported and that an investigation was ongoing.
