AN Oxford University College has spoken out after some of its students 'coughed at staff' while ignoring social distancing guidelines.

St Catherine's College blasted the 'reprehensible individuals' who refused to move when asked by junior deans and porters in the early hours of Monday morning.

Following widespread reports that staff would now wear body cameras, a spokesperson has confirmed this would only happen if similar incidents happen again.

She said: "St Catherine’s College fully condemns the disgraceful and unacceptable behaviour of a small number of students on its premises last weekend.

"The vast majority of our students are committed to ensuring that college remains a safe and respectful place for all, but those found to be in serious breach of our rules can expect serious disciplinary measures.

"We do not expect a repeat of this behaviour, but if exceptional situations do arise, we will make sure that we know who is involved and, if the situation requires it, we will make body cameras available for use by junior deans and porters."

An email seen by The Times newspaper said the students had gathered in the junior common room, a marquee and staircases.

It read: "Some of the students refused to give their names and agreed to disperse only when presented with the prospect of police involvement.

"Some particularly reprehensible individuals chose to express their displeasure by coughing in the junior deans' direction."

It comes after 100 new coronavirus cases were recorded at Oxford Brookes University in the week leading up to October 2.

A smaller outbreak of 30 cases last month was traced back to social gatherings.
