A £31m land deal will allow Oxford's city council to build more affordable homes, it is hoped.

The council has agreed to buy two parcels of land from another public body, Oxfordshire County Council.

These parcels of land are both in Littlemore: one is some land next to the empty Northfield House hostel on Sandy Lane, and the other is an old council depot on Lanham Way.

As many as 66 houses could be built at the two sites, but there could be fewer if the houses are spaces further apart from one another.

Half of all homes on the two sites would be affordable housing: either rented out as council houses, or sold at cheaper than market rate.

Oxford City Council signed off on a budget for the two sites, as well as improvements to several other housing plans it already has in the pipeline when councillors met on Monday (October 5).

The £31.647m will be added to a pot of money the council keeps aside for housing projects.

The money comes mostly from borrowing, but part of it is also funded by the Oxfordshire Growth Deal.

There are strict rules about where councils can borrow money from: usually it is other councils or the Public Works Loan Board.

Some of the other projects include adding more houses to sites where the council is already building new homes.

Oxfordshire County Council had also wanted to sell of the old Blackbird Leys Swimming pool to the city, but no mention of this site has been made in the city council's plans for new housing land yet.
