A pub with a reputation for serving up tasty pizzas is focusing on providing warm, comfortable outdoor space throughout the winter.

The White Rabbit in Friars Entry has been making the most its garden area after reopening on July 4, following the coronavirus lockdown.

Manager Edward Whinney said the hostelry has been fortunate as a pub garden was created last year, replacing parking spaces.

He added: “We like to think we are one of the safest places to go in Oxford.

“All customers get a temperature check when they come in and we also have a reservation system so diners can get time slots and book onto a table - it’s been table service from the word go.

“I believe we are still one of the best places for pizzas in the whole country - a while back Tripadvisor did a round-up and we were fifth.”

Mr Whinney said the pub was fortunate to have outdoor space at a time when concerns about the virus makes drinkers and diners feel safer outdoors.

He added: “The benches in our garden are heated and everyone can stay dry - we also have heated cushions - when you sit on them it activates the heated element.

“We are also working on the booths we have built to ensure they are weatherproof and warm for the winter.”

Mr Whinney is now keeping a close eye on the government’s instructions regarding the 10pm curfew imposed on pubs and restaurants last month.

He said: “We would be delighted if it was reversed but as a business it’s not our job to second-guess what we are told to do.

“Whatever comes our way we will pivot the business to ensure customers have a great experience.”

The pub manager said technology had been a “saving grace” during the coronavirus crisis.

“With QR codes people can order from table and we are about to launch our own app which will also help with online sales for takeaway and delivery,” he added.

He added: “We don’t second guess the restrictions or rules as we understand the need to keep our community safe and consider our job is to make sure whatever happens we are prepared and we can give our customers the best possible experience.

“As one of only two independent pubs in Oxford city centre we do not have the resources of the bigger chains and we have not received any grants to help us through this time.”

The pub’s pizzas range in price from £6 for a garlic pizza to £11.95 for a tagliata pizza featuring buffalo mozzarella, cured beef, tomatoes, rocket and parmesan.
