The Headington Festival, backed by community groups and local businesses had to be cancelled this year due to the coronavirus crisis but in previous years it has proved popular with residents gathering in Bury Knowle Park.

This year organisers issued a statement saying: "It is with great regret that we announce the cancellation of the 2020 Headington Festival. This decision has been taken in response to the current Covid-19 crisis."

In 2018, the sun shone on Bury Knowle Park, with thousands of revellers enjoying the annual festival.

Families made the most of the fine weather, with young and old descending on the park to sample the usual mix of activities, entertainment and food and drink.

The two-day event featured farmyard animals, magic tricks, music, and for the first time a cinema screening on the Saturday evening.

The popular festival also allowed many local organisations and community groups to showcase their work with a mixture of sports and crafts.

A wildlife photography competition for local primary schools was also held for the first time.

Chairwoman of the Headington Festival Organising Committee, Elsa Bell, said it was wonderful to see so many from the local community enjoying the free fiesta.

She said at the time: "It's a great community event.

"We are committed to it being free entry and try to make as many of the activities free, so it's as inclusive as it can be.

"The festival is so important each year because it brings people together, not just from Headington but from Wood Farm, Risinghurst and other areas."

The festival is funded through a mix of sponsorships from local business, fundraising and grants.
