MORE than a quarter of Oxford residents are students, new figures show.

An Office of National Statistics (ONS) study comparing British towns and cities with their French and German twins showed 26.6 per cent of people living in the city are in full-time higher education.

This was more than double the 12.1 per cent in Oxford's sister city Bonn, in Germany, even though continental locations generally had a greater proportion of students.

The study also found that 26 per cent of residents in the city were foreign nationals, compared to just 15 per cent in Bonn.

This again bucked the trend, but in other areas Oxford was more in line with the rest of the data.

The ONS found population growth between 2010 and 2018 was notably higher in British towns and cities, with the city growing by 5.3 per cent compared to 1.8 in Bonn.

Meanwhile, there are more people aged 75 years or older in German locations – this age group makes up 9.7 per cent of the population in Bonn, but just 5.7 per cent in Oxford.
