Restaurants across Oxford suffered a big fall in revenue during the coronavirus lockdown.

Once the restrictions were introduced in March to prevent the virus from spreading restaurants and pubs were only allowed to serve takeways.

Then in July the rules were relaxed and diners were allowed back in, with Rishi Sunak’s Eat Out To Help Out scheme giving eateries a massive boost as customers queued up to take advantage of the discount scheme.

Now, as increased restrictions look likely to return, reviews site Tripadvisor has shown which restaurants in the city have been impressing customers the most in recent months.

We want you to let us know which restaurants you have been visiting.

Top of the list is BBuona Pizza Bar in Gloucester Green, formerly Buonasera, which stayed busy during lockdown by serving its pizzas as takeaways when some restaurants decided to close.

Staff at BBuona say ‘you don’t have to go to Italy to eat a good pizza’.

The website added: “We have arrived in Oxford, happy to bring with us the flavours and colours of Pinsa, a typical Roman dish.

“Pinsa has its own flours mix different from pizza, a very small amount of yeast and 80% of water. Crunchy outside and soft inside, lighter, less fat and more digestible than a classic pizza.

“We are deeply and truly in love with Pinsa, its ancient origins and the variety of toppings that can make it really unique and tasty, so Pinsa is the protagonist of our menu here at BBuona Pizza Bar.”

Patrizio Finicelli said following a visiit this month staff “no doubt” made the best pizza in Oxford.

He said on Tripadvisor: “It is a truly independent Italian place with premium Italian ingredients and italian owner and staff.

“Their pizza is quite special as it is much lighter and crispier than heavy dough Napoli style. It does not surprise me it is #1 in Oxford!”

Za’atar Bake, an Arabic bakery in Cowley Road, is second followed by Antep Kitchen, in the same street and like BBuona they also have a five-star rating.

Hannah Civico from Nottingham said Turkish restaurant Antep Kitchen served delicious food when she visited for a celebration five days ago.

She wrote: “Visited Antep to celebrate a birthday! All waiting staff wore masks, and there were hand sanitiser stations (which were regularly used by staff and customers) which made us feel safer.

“Food was delicious, especially the bread. Very pleasant staff, tasty food. Staff went above and beyond to make sure our experience was the best it could be. We thoroughly recommend it! They made my birthday extra special.”

The hostelry has been building a reputation as a gastro pub in the short time it has been open.

Hydek2015, who visited last month said: “Desperate for food we happened on Hubble & Home but were too early for evening meal.

“We returned at 5:00 to be met by quiet and empty restaurant. Undeterred we ordered our meal and were not disappointed. Food was excellent, service great, just a shame we had arrived so early and there was no atmosphere although some customers did join us later.

“Love their choice of background music too. Definitely recommend them.”
