MEMBERS of the public concerned about the spread of coronavirus from returning students are being invited to a meeting being held by both of Oxford’s universities, students’ unions, the police and the city and county councils.

The ‘Virtual Town Hall’ event next Monday, will run from 6-7.30pm and will allow householders to hear about Covid-safety plans and measures to address the problems that have emerged in recent days with partying students at Brookes blamed for spreading the disease.

Oxford has the highest proportion of students in its population in the country, with about 44,000 – 28 per cent of Oxford’s 160,000 residents. The return of students sees a significant increase in the city’s population, although unlike most permanent residents, many students study and live in contained university sites and accommodation.

It is estimated that University of Oxford students contribute £58m towards the city’s economy and support 1600 jobs. Oxford Brookes students contribute £100m towards the locals economy.

The city council has organised the online event for local people to hear about measures being taken. There will be a Q&A session where pre-submitted questions from the public will be put to the panel, and some live questions taken.
