CORONAVIRUS cases have gone up by two in Oxford in the latest daily update from Public Health England.

It brings the total in the city to 1,060 and was part of a further eight cases in Oxfordshire.

Across the UK, confirmed Covid-19 cases rose by 2,659 yesterday, taking confirmed positive tests to 355,219.

Cumulative case counts include patients who are currently unwell, have recovered and those that have died.

A further eight of deaths in the UK were reported of people who died within 28 days of testing positive for the virus

Oxfordshire has not recorded a death at any of its hospitals since July 4.

Currently 45 of people in the South East are in hospital with coronavirus and two patients are on ventilation.

It comes as a ban on social gatherings of more than six people was announced in an effort to slow a rise in coronavirus cases.

From Monday the legal limit on social gatherings will be reduced from 30 people to six.

It will apply to gatherings indoors and outdoors – including private homes, as well as parks, pubs and restaurants.

Gatherings of more than six people will be allowed where the household or support bubble is larger than six, or where the gathering is for work or education purposes.

Exemptions will also apply for weddings, funerals and covid-secure organised team sports, with a full list to be published by the Government before Monday.

Failure to comply could result in a £100 fine, which will double on each repeat offence up to £3,200.

Globally, there have now been more than 27.5 million confirmed cases of coronavirus with almost 900,000 deaths.

The most cases have been recorded in the US, which accounts for more than six million of the world’s positive tests.

It also has the highest death toll at almost 190,000 people.
