AN OXFORDSHIRE vicar is urging people to get out on their bikes.

Alec Gill is calling on people to join this year's Ride and Stride around the county and raise money for churches.

With many normal weekend activities still impossible the importance of staying healthy being stressed more than ever, the annual charity bike ride between churches is one way to get social and get exercise.

However, Rev Gill is also stressing that Oxfordshire churches need the money now more than ever.

The Vicar at St James the Great Church in West Hanney, near Wantage, said: "Churches and other places of worship have not been immune to the effects of Covid-19.

"We rely a great deal on donations and these have been affected by the long-term closure of all places of worship.

"That’s why I am calling on people to ‘get out to help out’ and help raise money for the upkeep of some of the most historic and beautiful buildings in our communities."

This year's Ride and Stride will take place on Saturday, September 12.

Members of the public all over the country are asked to get sponsored to walk or cycle from one place of worship to another.

Nationally, Ride and Stride raises more than £1million every year, with Oxfordshire contributing around £100,000 to this.
