Some football club chairmen - or chairwomen - are more hands-on than others but Robert Maxwell was not afraid to mix in with the fans.

He took over at Oxford United in 1982 and was chairman as they rose through the ranks from the third division to the top tier.

He resigned in 1987, handing over to his son Kevin Maxwell.

It was early on at his time at the club that he was spotted watching a game from the Manor Ground's London Road end.

Our archive picture shows Mr Maxwell packed in with the fans at an Oxford vs Portsmouth game where clashes between the fans 'turned ugly'.

The tycoon was chairman of Oxford United at the time of one of the club's biggest triumphs - when they won the Milk Cup in 1986 and he was happy to celebrate with the players and the fans.

Robert Maxwell also received support from his daughter Ghislaine Maxwell and aged just 22 she was made a director of the club in 1984.

She became a familiar figure at matches sitting alongside her father in the directors' box, wearing a yellow and blue United scarf and cheering on the team.

In an interview with The Oxford Times, she revealed that she had started an United supporters' club at Balliol College, where she was studying modern history with languages.

She had already attracted 160 members and had arranged a discount for them to attend United matches.

Her interest in football was recognised by her father, who invited her to become a director.
