TRAVELLERS who took over playing fields used by youth football teams in north Oxford have been ordered to leave.

Around ten caravans and a number of vans are believed to have arrived in the in the Five Mile Drive Recreation Ground in Wolvercote on Tuesday evening.

One local, who asked to remain anonymous claimed the newcomers had been knocking on people's doors asking for food and water.

Oxford City Council, working with Thames Valley Police, said it issued eviction notices this morning.

It said: "A group of seven travellers’ caravans gained access to the Five Mile Drive recreation ground yesterday evening.

"The notices require the travellers to vacate the site by 10am today."
