A BOARDED-UP ex-swimming pool in Blackbird Leys is set to be sold off as part of a major redevelopment of the city estate.

County councillors are poised to declare the land 'surplus to requirements' ahead of a council meeting while two other sites are set to be sold for more affordable homes in the area.

Oxfordshire County Council will meet for a cabinet meeting on Tuesday to discuss the proposals.

Officers are recommending that three sites should be sold to Oxford City Council for redevelopment as well as for affordable housing.

Two areas have been identified as ripe for the new homes - part of Northfield Hostel and the former depot site at Lanham Way, both in the Littlemore area of the city.

The former Blackbird Leys Swimming Pool has been recommended for incorporation into the existing regeneration scheme for the area.

Speaking of the plans Oxfordshire County Council cabinet member for finance David Bartholomew said the proposals would benefit both councils.

He said: “We are very much aware of the city council’s quest to find space for affordable housing and we were very receptive when approached about the land that we own but which is now surplus to the county council’s requirements.

“Extensive negotiations were entered into with the city [council] which have now resulted in mutually beneficial agreement between both councils subject to legal agreements and approval by councillors.

“Should the deal be approved we wish the city council well in its future tenure of the land in question and we support its aspirations for how they should be developed with affordable housing and regeneration for Blackbird Leys in mind.”

Councillor Alex Hollingsworth, Oxford City Council’s cabinet member for planning and housing delivery, said: “The city council is actively looking at opportunities to acquire land to bring forward more affordable housing in and around the city.

"Our cabinet will be considering this land acquisition opportunity next month.”

In background papers prepared ahead of the meeting officers said that the city council was 'actively seeking new sites in order to deliver additional affordable housing' but was 'struggling to find suitable sites.'

The former swimming pool is currently non-operational with the pool area boarded over.

Officers said it was leased to the trustees of the Oxfordshire County Scouts until January 2022 and the report states that 'there is 'little potential for alternative development.'

Oxfordshire County Council will meet to discuss the plans this week and the city council will be presented with the proposals in September.

The meeting - which is being held virtually - will take place on Tuesday at 10am.
