THE global death has toll officially reached 750,000 as new figures suggest the UK has not finished the first wave of coronavirus.

No updated Covid-19 cases for Oxfordshire were released today, with Public Health England tweeting that 'owing to technical difficulties with data processing', the latest England and UK cases and tests data would not be released.

As of Wednesday at 9am there have been 3,317 positive tests in the county with an infection rate per 100,000 people of 480.

There have been no new coronavirus deaths at Oxfordshire’s hospitals.

The current death toll at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is 182.

Globally there have been now been more than 750,000 deaths, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. India has surpassed the UK to have the fourth highest death toll, with just over 47,000 confirmed fatalities.

It comes as new data suggests the UK is not at the beginning of a second coronavirus wave, and is still trying to end the first.

There were 1,434 daily new cases in the UK on average over the two weeks up to August 8, excluding care homes, according to the latest Covid Symptom Study app figures based on the data from 10,988 swab tests.

Tim Spector, professor of genetic epidemiology at King’s College London, said:“This is further confirmation that we aren’t at the beginning of a second wave and rather, still trying to end the first. The figures also suggest that the outbreaks we are seeing in other countries such as Belgium, France and Spain aren’t having an effect here in the UK yet.

“On top of this, the hot weather which caused concern by making many flock to crowded beaches and parks doesn’t seem to be having the predicted negative impact.

“Overall, we are pleasantly surprised by the figures this week, which are back down to the early July levels and hope that the good news continues.”
