A POLICE inspector has been given a final written warning after he reported a robbery to another police force - then withdrew his support for it.

Acting inspector Iain Kane withdrew his co-operation from the other force's investigation apparently because he was not happy with the way it was being conducted.

However, a misconduct hearing has heard that he did not want to ‘challenge the investigative procedures’ of one of the officers involved because he wanted to protect his own interests around a promotion application.

At a second misconduct hearing from July 20 to July 22 - after the first was halted in February - the Thames Valley Police officer was found to have breached the standards of professional behaviour in respect of the clause ‘integrity’.

As a result, he has been given a final chance.

Acting inspector Kane was previously accused of making fake insurance claims, an ‘inconsistent report of robbery’ and exaggerating the money owed to him when he ran a police station tuck shop at his Amersham base from March 7 to August 6 last year.

Had he been found guilty of all three accusations he could have been fired on the spot for gross misconduct.
