THE city's MPs have said they are 'incredibly proud' of the 'incredible' work done by Oxford scientists working to create a coronavirus vaccine.

Results, published on Monday, of the first stage trials showed the vaccine induced a strong immune response in the more than 1,000 people who took part in the trial and it was safe to move to larger-scale trials.

Oxford West and Abingdon MP Layla Moran said: “On behalf of our whole community, I’m incredibly proud that Oxford’s COvid-19 vaccine has passed crucial trials. I know we’re not there yet, but the signs are really promising.

“I’d like to thank all the scientists and others who have worked around the clock to get us to this point, and we’re so grateful to everyone who volunteered to take part in the trial itself."

Oxford East MP Anneliese Dodds tweeted a picture of this paper's front page story about the findings and praised the 'incredible achievement' of medics and clinical trial volunteers. She added: "There is a very long road to go but the speed so far is deeply impressive."

Ms Moran has also tabled a motion in parliament calling on the government to 'ensure those leading the Oxford vaccine project receive the honours they deserve'.

She said: “Giving those leading the project honours will be a clear sign that we deeply value those who have dedicated their time and hard work to tackling this global pandemic.”
