NOSTALGIC shoppers have remembered the sweet smell of freshly fried doughnuts lingering on the high street.

Taking to Facebook, one person shared a photograph of rows of jam donuts covered in sugar, saying: “When you stepped outside of Selfridges and were greeted by the sweet smell of…”

Oxford Mail:

Selfridges in 1983.

The post was flooded with memories of the long queues outside of Don Millers before it closed.

Ex-employees even recalled starting work at 4am to prepare for the busy opening three hours later.

One person said: “I used to work there when I was 15, neighbours used to wait for me to bring home the fresh cream doughnuts.”

Another customer added: “This and Bretts Burgers on Cowley Road…unbelievable.”

Others praised the ‘best egg mayo sarnies they have ever tasted’, the ‘yummy Cornish pasties’ and ‘warm fruit loaf’.

The bakery also sold thick milkshakes and sausage rolls.

One man even recalled paying 10p for a doughnut on their way back from college.

More than 200 people loved the post on Nostalgic Oxford, with others disappointed it ever closed, saying: “Oh why did it go.”
