“Oxford is where my roots are and I’m looking forward to succeeding Stephen Jones and building on the great work he’s been doing,” he said.

“I’ve enjoyed getting to know the team at Teddies over the last few months.”

Mr Chirnside attended the Dragon School, Oxford before winning a scholarship to Eton College.

He then took a Congratulatory First in Classics and Modern Languages at Merton College, Oxford.

Mr Chirnside then taught Latin and Greek at Eton from 2004, for 12 years, in a period which saw him become head of Year 11, and Classics, in different occasions.

He left Eton in 2016 to become director of studies at Harrow, before becoming deputy head in 2019.

Chris Jones, chair of governors at St Edward’s, said: “Alastair and his wife Zannah have two daughters, Mary and Lizzie, aged 9 and 8, so his extensive experience of educating boys is matched by a passionate interest in the education of girls.

“He shares with me and my fellow governors the ambition to build on the achievements of the current warden, Stephen Jones, and secure St Edward’s place as an undisputed leader in co-education.”
