Fly tippers have dumped a 'large quantity' of asbestos in Chipping Norton.

West Oxfordshire District Council tweeted a picture of boards filled with the dangerous substance today.

The council said the recycling ‘bring site’ at New Street had been closed as a precaution due to the material being left near the entrance.

It added: "We are asking residents to be patient and store recycling at home until we can reopen the site on Thursday morning."

Asbestos was often used in buildings for insulation, flooring and roofing before the long-term damage to lungs from breathing it in was understood.
