A kettle on the hob had caught fire and the occupier tried to put the flames out themselves with a dry cloth before escaping.
Firefighters in breathing apparatus extinguished the flames, which had spread to the side worktop and bin, with a high-pressure hose, ventilated the property and fitted smoke alarms.
South Central Ambulance Service took the occupier to hospital for a precautionary check up due to smoke inhalation.
Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said the incident could have been 'a lot worse' as there were no smoke detectors in the property.
