NEW signs urging locals to socially distance while out on their daily exercise have been installed along Bicester’s 5km health routes.

With the number of residents walking and running soaring during the pandemic, Cherwell District Council installed the signs on every kilometre marker.

The social distancing notices read: 'Protect yourself and others' and 'Practice social distancing by keeping 2 metres apart'.

Councillor Andrew McHugh, Cherwell’s lead member for health and wellbeing, explained the decision: "With leisure centres and gyms still closed, the number of residents using Bicester’s health routes has surged.

"Whilst most people are doing their best to keep two metres apart, the new signs will serve as a constant reminder, helping them to feel even more safe whilst using the trails."

During the coronavirus crisis new pathways or ‘desire lines’ have also been formed at various points on the routes by joggers stepping off the pavement and onto the grass to keep their distance from others.

Community groups have also used the circuits to entertain youngsters with treasure hunts, whilst several decorative fairy doors have popped up on the Langford route.
