ARMY recruitment was different in those days!
This was the scene at a Green Jackets display at Thame in May 1961.
Robert Howlett, aged six, Michael Stockwell, 10, and 11-year-old Timothy Malony, all of Thame, jumped at the chance to get a close-up look to a real machine gun and its mechanics.
That caption attached to this photo from our archives also says that in another photo from the day readers could see 11-year-old Virginia Tate being shown how to fire a Tommy gun, while her friend Verity Aldridge, also 11, 'cautiously inspects a grenade'.
