MOUNTAINS of rubbish littered Cornmarket Street following a strike by Oxford binmen in 1979.
The refuse collectors had joined a 24-hour walkout by other public service workers over working conditions in January that year.
The row was partly because of heavy snow which had left drivers fearing for their safety.
On the 25th the Oxford Mail reported that the mounds of rubbish like this one would finally be collected three days late.
