A MAN who prosecutors claim was found with class A drugs and £1,900 in fake bank notes has appeared at court.

James Howkins faces one count of having counterfeit currency notes and two counts of possession with intent to supply crack cocaine and heroin.

The 35-year-old of Great Clarendon Street, Oxford, appeared at Oxford Magistrates' Court for the first hearing of his case yesterday.

Prosecutors allege that Howkins was spotted by police on Saturday and on further investigation was found to have a quantity of the drugs as well as the fake currency.

Peter Ryman, speaking on behalf of the Crown Prosecution Service, called Howkins' involvement in the alleged drugs supply 'street dealing' and said the role played was 'significant.'

Howkins gave no indication at the hearing as to whether he would plead guilty or not guilty to any of the three counts that he faces.

District Judge Kamlesh Rana, presiding, said the case should be heard at the upper court and not before the magistrates' court.

The case was adjourned for a further hearing to be held at Oxford Crown Court to take place on June 19.

Howkins was remanded in custody in the meantime.
