A THUG who 'fly kicked' his partner in the ribs before pressing his foot to her head in a drunken rage has been jailed.

During Aaron Plucknett's explosion of violence he also threatened a passer-by with a knife and hurled racist obscenities at him.

The 37-year-old of London Road, Headington, had already admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm, assault by beating, threatening with a knife, having cannabis and a public order offence.

He was sentenced for those offences and the single night of violence at Oxford Crown Court today.

Outlining the case prosecutor Alexandra Bull said the incident took place on March 18 in Oxford.

Plucknett had been out with his partner of some 14 years together with others before ending up at The Baron, Cowley Road.

An argument erupted inside and they left and it was while outside that the shocking acts of violence began.

Prosecutors said that a witness described Plucknett performing a 'flying kick' to the woman's ribs.

He then slapped that witness to the face before smashing a bottle of Vodka he had retrieved from his coat.

Plucknett was 'screaming and shouting' incoherently and his partner, despite the violence she had suffered, tried to take him home.

As they walked home Plucknett shouted abuse at a passing jogger and continued assaulting his partner.

At his home he showered but soon after became 'confrontational' once again.

He accused the woman of being to blame for the violence and 'smacked her around her face.'

On leaving the house the assaults continued and Plucknett grabbed her hair and 'repeatedly' struck her.

He then put his foot to the side of her face with so much force the victim later said 'I thought my brain was going to pop out.'

It was then that a member of the public saw what was going on and tried to intervene but Plucknett pulled out a knife and hurled extreme racist abuse at him, chasing him off.

Police were called and Plucknett later admitted the night of violence.

He was also found to be in possession of a quantity of cannabis.

In mitigation at the sentencing hearing defence barrister Kellie Enever said that her client was 'utterly ashamed of his behaviour from that night' and was 'remorseful.'

She added that Plucknett had been taking medication at the time and that the combination of those drugs as well as alcohol was 'clearly not a good idea.'

Sentencing, Judge Ian Pringle QC described Plucknett's behaviour that night as 'utterly disgraceful.'

He said: "This whole episode was an extremely sorry one."

Plucknett was jailed for a total of 28 months and he must pay a statutory victim surcharge and obey a restraining order.
