More than 28,000 people who have tested positive for coronavirus in the UK have died as the government prepares to announce how lockdown restrictions will be eased.

Cabinet Office Minister Michael Gove led the coronavirus daily briefing yesterday afternoon where he said that of the 186,599 people who have contracted the disease, 28,446 have died.

The number includes deaths in hospitals, care homes and the community, but only for those who have tested positive for Covid-19.

In Oxfordshire, there are 1,583 confirmed cases of coronavirus.

NHS England announced 327 new deaths of people who tested positive for Covid-19 in hospitals in England, bringing the total to 21,180.

Mr Gove said a roadmap on easing the lockdown in the UK that Prime Minister Boris Johnson will present next week will be 'comprehensive'.

He said he knows those in the public services in particular will need guidelines on safe working, and that ministers are working with unions.

The minister said:"We've all learned to adapt, and we must carry on doing so after the Prime Minister sets out how we will get back to work later this week.

"His comprehensive plan will explain how we can get our economy moving, how we can get our children back to school, how we can travel to work more safely, and how we can make life in the workplace safer.

"But before we can ease the existing restrictions we must ensure the government's five tests are met - that the number of cases are falling, that death rates are declining, that the NHS has what it needs, and that measures are in place to stop a second peak overwhelming the NHS."
