SELF-referral coronavirus test booking for key workers has temporarily shut just hours after it was launched due to high demand.

The Government's website for testing added a link for self-isolating key workers, which includes NHS and care staff as well as police, teachers and transport workers, earlier today.

But it is now showing 'applications closed' and urging people to 'check back here later'.

The Department of Health and Social Care has now tweeted: "There has been significant demand for booking tests today.

"We apologise for any inconvenience. We are continuing to rapidly increase availability. More tests will be available tomorrow."

The testing website states under self-referral: "Essential workers who are self-isolating can book a test directly.

"You can select a regional test site drive-through appointment or home test kit."

It added: "Home test kit availability will initially be limited but more will become available.

"There is good availability of regional test sites, so please select this option if you can."

A regional testing site opened at Oxford's Thornhill Park and Ride yesterday.

Employers can also book on behalf of their workers via the same Government website by emailing portalservicedesk@dhsc.gov.uk.

If referred through this portal, essential workers will receive a text message with a unique invitation code to book a test for themselves.

The test involves taking a swab of the nose and the back of the throat.
