A PRISONER who barricaded his cell and stashed a mobile phone in his underwear when officers came to his door has been handed more time behind bars.

Serving prisoner Kane Jones appeared via videolink from HMP Bullingdon to face sentencing at Oxford Crown Court yesterday.

The 24-year-old of HMP Bullingdon had already admitted one count of having without legal authority a prohibited item while at the prison near Bicester.

Outlining the case prosecutor Cathy Olliver said on January 23 prison staff were using mobile phone detection equipment when the device picked up a strong signal coming from Jones’s cell.

When they tried to get in they found the door had been ‘barricaded’ from the inside.

On attempting to open the cell they saw Jones was trying to hide something in his underwear.

Prison officers went on to discover a black Long CZ mobile phone in his possession.

On further investigation it was found that the calls and text messages made using the device did not match his pre-approved contact list but they ‘did not appear to be sinister in nature.’

In mitigation Eiran Reilly said that his client had not committed any similar offences and suffered from ADHD and autism.

Sentencing, Judge Ian Pringle QC said: “You are currently serving 18 months but it must be known that those who get in possession of a mobile phone will have their sentences extended.

“I will keep it as short as possible.”

Jones was jailed for a total of six months, which will be served consecutive to his existing jail term of 18 months.

He must also pay a statutory victim surcharge.
