STAFF at an opticians in Didcot stepped in to help a doctor who was struggling to see while wearing his personal protective equipment (PPE).

Dr Patheeben Nagarajan is a critical care physician working at the John Radcliffe Hospital.

The doctor contacted Specsavers Didcot after he was struggling to fit his specs underneath his visor and full-face mask and provided him with contact lenses.

Like doctors, opticians are also classed as key workers and are still on hand to help but are only offering urgent and essential care.

Opticians help other key workers who would not be able to function without it.

Specsavers highlight that this is especially important where the usual hospital services and NHS facilities are being prioritised for the fight against COVID-19.

Dr Nagarajan was thankful for the opticians help. He said: “I hadn’t worn contact lenses for several years and wasn’t sure that I’d be able to find a solution during the lockdown.

“But fortunately, Specsavers were able to help – advising on the lenses and fitting and dispatching my correct prescription extremely promptly.

“With my new contact lenses I feel confident both in the knowledge that I’m protecting myself but also that I’m able to perform my duty to my best too.”

Rukhsana Bi, Specsavers Didcot store director said: “Despite being closed for routine appointments we are still open for care – supporting those who need urgent and essential assistance - helping those customers and hopefully relieving some of the pressure on the NHS too.”

Customers can phone the Didcot store for advice on, 01235 517 100, to be assessed on the level of care that they might need.

However, key workers can walk in and seek immediate advice should they need to.

Glasses and contact lenses can also be purchased online for customers with a current prescription at specsavers.co.uk.
