A MAN who went to his neighbour's door in the middle of the night on Valentine’s Day wielding a knife has been jailed.

Liam Peedell, then of an address in Fulbrook, Burford, had downed four pints before he was seen on CCTV wearing a bandana at the woman’s home.

The 21-year-old said he just wanted ‘a buzz’ before turning the blade on himself in an apparent suicide bid.

Peedell had already admitted two counts of having a bladed article and a separate count of stalking charged against him was dropped.

Outlining the case at his sentencing hearing at Oxford Crown Court today prosecutor Cathy Olliver said Peedell had left his victim ‘absolutely terrified.’

She said that in the early hours of February 14 this year the victim woke to the sound of knocking at her door.

On investigating she saw that Peedell was at her home, wearing a makeshift bandana, and holding a knife in his hand.

She was too terrified to go downstairs, the court heard, and the police were called.

He was later found at home next door in bed wearing the same clothing as was seen on the victim’s CCTV from her address.

He was arrested and a lock knife seized from his room.

On further investigation the woman made a sinister discovery and saw that Peedell had been spotted on the same CCTV the previous night, on February 13.

In the early hours of that night he had tried the door handle and placed his hand in the letter box while his other hand held a knife.

The woman only realised he had gone to her house after checking back through her camera.

The broken tip of another knife was also later discovered lodged in her door as well as Peedell’s blood.

A victim personal statement revealed that the woman has not felt safe since the incident.

After Peedell’s arrest he went on to claim that he was ‘down’ and had written a suicide note.

He said he was not planning on using the knife and he didn’t know why he tried the door handle.

The court also heard that Peedell has no previous convictions and is diagnosed with autism and ADHD.

In mitigation his defence barrister Peter Du Feu said that his client had ambitions to train as a plumber and to ‘pursue as normal a lifestyle as he can.’

Sentencing, Judge Maria Lamb said it appeared Peedell had made a ‘concerted effort to get into that address.’

She also quoted a doctor’s report who described the behaviour as ‘ultimately bizarre and difficult to understand.’

She added that Peedell must have been aware his victim was home because her lights had been on and a car was there.

Peedell was jailed for a total of 16 months and he must pay a statutory victim surcharge.

He must also obey an indefinite restraining order.
