A SUPERMARKET has thanked staff at a nearby prison with fruit and Easter eggs.

Waitrose in Wallingford presented the gifts to workers at Huntercombe prison, in Nuffield.

A member of staff at the prison took to social media to thank the store.

They tweeted: “HMP Huntercombe thanks Wallingford Waitrose for quite possibly being the first supermarket in the UK to support the staff of their local prison during these exceptionally challenging times.

"Finally feeling some love.”

The director of the national prison charity Butler Trust, thanked the staff at the supermarket, in St Martin's Street, after its team recognised the work of staff at Huntercombe.

Director of the Oxfordshire-based trust, Simon Shepherd said: “I’d like to add my thanks to the staff at Wallingford Waitrose for showing their appreciation in such a generous and spontaneous way.

“Prison staff work in challenging and difficult circumstances at the best of times, but the pressures are magnified at the moment with staff falling ill and self-isolating and those left having to deal with stressed prisoners who fear falling victim to Covid-19 as well as some who already have.

“The prison staff who work in and manage these situations are hidden heroes and deserve our respect and praise.”
