"You may think you're invincible," he warned, but you can still get the virus.

He has repeated the advice to social distance and self-isolate and says gyms, leisure centres and theatres must also close but shops remain open.

Mr Johnson said: "We want you to stay at home, that’s how we can protect our NHS and save lives."

These measures will be reviewed on a monthly basis.

With this, chancellor Rishi Sunak has unveiled 'unprecedented' measures to help businesses and workers.

He announced:

- The government is going to help to pay wages. It's setting up a new Coronavirus Job Protection Scheme. Any employer in the UK will be eligible. They can contact HMRC for a grant.

- These grants will cover 80 per cent of salaries, up to £2,500 per month. Employers can top up if they choose to.

- It will cover the cost of wages back-dated to March 1 and will be open for three months. There is NO LIMIT on the funding

- Further cash flow support through the tax system - deferring the next quarter of VAT payments. Businesses won't pay VAT until the end of June.

"I know people are worried about losing their jobs, about not being able to pay the mortgage, about not having enough to buy food and bills.

"To all those at home anxious about the days ahead - you will not get through this alone," he said.
