THE friends and family of a geese, cat and critter lover who was hit by a lorry on a busy road have clubbed together to raise hundreds of pounds for charity.

Two Go Fund Me pages have been set up to remember Toby Beers-Baker who was hit by a parcel force lorry walking along the A4260 on February 21.

One of the pages has now raised £305 for The Oxfordshire Animal Sanctuary – a charity that rehomes around 500 animals across the county every year.

The other has been set up for a charity in his hometown of Chichester called the Brent Lodge Bird and Wildlife Trust which rescues sick animals and makes them better.

So far both pages have a combined total of £675, raised by 22 donations.

Paying tribute to the caring animal-lover Abi Pears wrote on the page that it was more 'fitting' to raise money for the charities than it was to accept flowers or 'traditional tokens'.

She said that loads of people had got in touch after finding out about his tragic death, so setting up a Go Fund Me page seemed like a 'positive way' to remember him.

She explained: "On Friday 21 February this year, Toby was tragically taken from us in a road traffic accident.

"The sheer amount of people who have reached out with condolences, and more importantly, stories of the incredible ways he touched their lives has been astonishing.

"We know that Toby will live on in our hearts, and in the countless memories he gave us, but we also wanted to ensure that those remembering him and wishing to do something for him could do so in a positive way, and in a way that he would have wanted."

She thanked well-wishes in advance, who have since left tributes saying he was a 'great guy' and 'nice dude'.

The Hollywood bowl Security Guard even donated £50 with the message: "(Security guard) I remember Toby being good at winning the tickets, nice dude, happy couple."

Ms Pears added: "Toby was always an animal lover - so it seems fitting that rather than accepting flowers or traditional tokens, we've decided to set up two donation pages for animal charities in his hometown of Chichester, and in Oxford.

"Thank you in advance for your support, and hopefully this way Toby can in some way carry on supporting cats, geese and all the other critters he loved in life!"

Sharing pictures of him feeding ducks in a park, she also shared the tribute: "My darling Toby, we spent countless hours befriending and feeding the geese, ducks, and other animals in Oxford – including my attempts to befriend/adopt Horatio and Walter, and yours to adopt little Tuna the cat.

"I promise not to stop taking them bread whenever I can. I hope our choices of charity are ok – I will give something to both. Miss you, and love you forever."

At the opening of his inquest at Oxford Coroners' Court on March 4, it was heard how the business owner had been walking along a section of the road between Adderbury and Deddington, near Banbury, at about 4am that Friday morning.

The 33-year-old, from Oxford, who was dressed in 'dark clothing' and on a section of the road without street-lights, was hit by an artic lorry travelling from Adderbury at 4.08am.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and his cause of death was listed as a head trauma.

A full inquest is expected to take place on August 20.
