Health secretary Matt Hancock has confirmed that the government will ask over 70s to self isolate for four months.

He said the advice is likely to be issued 'in the coming weeks.'

"The measures that we're taking, the measures that we're looking at taking, are very, very significant and they will disrupt the ordinary lives of almost everybody in the country in order to tackle this virus," he said.

Mr Hancock also said, live on Sky News, that the NHS does not have enough ventilators.

He issued a plea to manufacturers to make as many as possible and the government would buy them all.

He said for now, people who have elderly relatives, where they are both healthy, should continue to go and see them and take them supplies.

On Marr, he said getting through this would need 'a national army' and that every single person should be doing their bit.

He also hit out at panic buyers.

A row has erupted over the government's announcement of advice, after Robert Peston was briefed on Saturday night and Matt Hancock wrote a piece for the Telegraph - which was put behind a pay wall.

Critics have argued that there should be no bias in the distribution of important healthcare information which impacts the entire population.
