HENRY VIII met Harry Potter at an Oxford school as it celebrated the magic of World Book Day.

Costumed characters from both history books and fiction have been roaming around Oxfordshire today, with many schools and workplaces taking part in the national event.

Elmer the elephant, Pinocchio and a dragon were among the literary legends brought to life at Christ Church Cathedral School in Oxford, whose headmaster Richard Murray dressed up as the school’s founder, Henry VIII.

World Book Day is a registered charity and this was the event's 23rd year.

It aims to provide every child and young person a book of their own, and encourage children to discover the pleasure of reading.

Cassie Chadderton, chief executive of World Book Day, said: "Reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success.

"Shared reading, for just 10 minutes a day, can have a long-lasting impact."
