PROTESTORS marched in support of hospital transport drivers during a 'day of action' on October 22, 1982.

The long-running demonstration led to appointments and operations being cancelled at Oxford's John Radcliffe Hospital.

It also meant supplies of drugs, fresh linen and sterile supplies were not reaching other hospitals in the county.

Health workers carried out the wave of strikes in a row over pay and there were pickets at the Churchill Hospital as well as at the John Radcliffe Hospital.

The strikes and marches were co-ordinated by the National Union of Public Employees.

Journalists at this newspaper and members of the National Union of Journalists contributed to a paid-for advert showing solidarity for the strikes at the time.
