I attended a wonderful Witney Town Band concert on Saturday at St Mary's Church in Witney.
In fact, that is an understatement. It was fantastic.
We were not surprised to learn the band won the Oxfordshire Brass Band competition last week, plus a large cup. They certainly are bigger and better than ever.
Their programme included marches, arrangements for brass band from Shostakovitch and Sibelius, plus musicals and original brass band pieces. They played with verve and precision.
At half time there was huge excitement, as the 15-strong trainee band were making their first public performance. The children were aged between six and 12, and oh boy, were they good. They played pieces including the theme from Wallace and Gromit and Singing in the Rain – which left the whole audience smiling.
If you hear the band is playing in public again, I urge you to go and see them. Witney should be very proud of them. They deserve our support. Well done, The band!
