THE acceptance of card payments in Oxford taxis could be made compulsory under new city council plans.

Oxford City Council is today launching a public consultation aimed at the taxi travelling public and those in the licensed trade.

Councillors want to know if there is a demand for city-council licensed taxis to offer a card payment option via a card reading machine as a compulsory requirement.

The council said a positive response to the consultation could lead to a change in policy that would require all licensed vehicles to have a card payment option.

The public consultation will be open until April 2.
