PEOPLE in Oxfordshire can look forward to the liveliest VE Day since 1945 as pubs, clubs and cinemas are allowed to stay open until 1am to mark 75 years since the Second World War ended in Europe.

Ministers had already announced that the traditional early May Bank Holiday will be moved from Monday May 4 to Friday, May 8 for the landmark anniversary.

Home Secretary Priti Patel's order before Parliament formally extends the opening hours.

All premises that are licensed to trade until 11pm will get a top-up of an extra two hours to take them into the morning of May 9, the Home Office has said.

Miss Patel said: “VE Day events across the country will see the nation come together to pay tribute to the heroes who fought for our freedom and supported the war effort at home.

"Pubs are at the heart of our communities and this is a great opportunity to raise a glass to mark this historic occasion.”

One of the biggest events will be VE Day 75 at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

It will feature the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Military Wives Choirs, celebrities VIPs and veterans, and the event has sold out but it will be screened live in more than 400 cinemas nationwide.

The order, confirmed in Parliament on Wednesday, will also apply to premises licensed to provide entertainment such as music, dances, plays and films.

Commemorations and events will be held across the country to remember the heroism of British, Commonwealth and Allied armed forces personnel The decision follows a consultation with partners including representatives of licensing authorities, the police, the licensed trade, community groups aqnd veterans’ organisations.

The government has extended licensing hours for the FIFA World Cup in 2014 and the 2012 Diamond Jubilee.
