A dog has been laid to rest after being involved in a hit and run on Monday.

Jay Porter from Dashwood Road near Iffley, was the owner of the three-year-old Staffie Cross named Bruce.

Mr Porter was left devastated after his dog was put down following the collision.

Mr Porter said: “I was out walking my dog, he was off the lead, when he ran across the road, I called him back, I looked at him and he looked at me and thought 'I’ll be there in a minute'. Someone else was walking their dog and my dog loves playing so he ran to meet the other dog and a car hit him.”

After the dog was hit, the driver left and the dog ran off, and Mr Porter followed his shaken-up dog.

Bruce the dog was cut so Mr Porter took him home.

Later he realised the dog was breathing strangely so a neighbour helped take the dog to the vets.

The dog was given medication for the pain, he was in shock, air was seeping out of its lungs and he had to have an operation.

Bruce showed signs of recovery and was told he could be coming home, however the vet then noticed the readings were incorrect and Bruce the dog had to be put down.

Mr Porter said: “We had to put him to sleep on Wednesday evening and put him down to rest on Friday afternoon.”

He added: “I really don’t blame the driver for hitting the dog, it’s the fact he didn’t stop and as far as I know it wasn’t reported.”

Mr Porter took his dog to a vet in Cowley. He said: “The vet was absolutely amazing, I had to pay but he did what he could because we are a low-income family and he kept the costs down.”

He added: “Me and my daughter want to set up a fund for others who have a low income, so they have the money for unexpected accidents like this. There’s nowhere to donate to yet but we would like to call it Bruce’s Paw.”

The incident has been reported to the police. If you have seen anything, please report it to the police with the crime reference number 209/216/20/4343/WE.
