An Oxfordshire village pub has been crowned Family-Friendly Pub of the Year in a competition run by Heineken-owned Star Pubs & Bars.

The Extraordinary Hare in West Hendred reopened 11 months ago after a four-year closure.

Now it has beaten competition from 2,500 pubs around the country owned by Star to be awarded the company's title of Family-Friendly Pub of the Year.

The judges were looking for a pub that was family-friendly and still had a great atmosphere for those visiting without children.

The Star Pubs & Bars judges commended licensees Kate Hayden and Paul Warriner for creating a pub that had a 'warm and cosy vibe' that welcomed families, children and grandparents.

The pub, equidistant between Wantage and Didcot, was also singled out because it entertained children with activities, they said.

The Extraordinary Hare even has a 'petting zoo' which is home to Steve and Dave the goats.

There is also a large fenced garden with giant games such as Jenga and inside there is a selection of board games and puzzles for children of all ages.

It was noted by the judges that Ms Hayden and Mr Warriner have added a range of thoughtful touches to make sure visits are relaxed for families.

The pub caters for a variety of needs, they said, with a separate menu that features home-cooked kids' favourites which come with a free squash and are served with special child-sized cutlery, crockery and drinking cups.

High chairs and bottle and baby food warming are available and the pub’s fitted out baby changing area has free nappies and wipes and 'receives constant praise from its customers', the managers said.

Since reopening the pub last year, Ms Hayden and Mr Warriner have started holding events for families in the area.

The couple hosted a Halloween party with a free buffet which attracted more than 40 children.

They are also now planning an Easter Egg hunt and breakfast with Santa later this year.

Manager Mechelle Quinn received the prize on behalf of the pub from actor and comedian Joel Dommett at an awards ceremony at the Luton Hoo Hotel in Bedfordshire.

Ms Hayden said: “We set out to restore The Extraordinary Hare as a good village pub that everyone could enjoy and aim to make all our customers feel welcome, whatever their age.

“It’s a real honour to receive this award – it makes all the hard work of reopening the pub worthwhile.

“We couldn’t have achieved either without the support of people from across the area.”
