The government has this afternoon warned British nationals to leave China due to the coronavirus outbreak.

It comes after a 39 year-old man in Hong Kong died after contracting the virus.

In updated advice, the government states:

The British Consulates-General in Wuhan and Chongqing are currently closed. If you’re in China and able to leave, you should do so. The elderly and those with pre-existing medical conditions may be at heightened risk ...

Some airlines, including British Airways and Virgin Atlantic, have announced a suspension of flights to and from mainland China. Other commercial airlines are still operating, but it may become harder to access departure options over the coming weeks.

A man who was taken ill after flying back from Wuhan, the epicentre of the virus outbreak, is being cared for in Oxford.

He was one of 11 Britons who returned on Sunday. Sources say he now feels 'fine' but has been taken in for treatment as a precautionary measure.
