A NEW race will be added to the Town and Gown programme as the event's popularity soars.

The 10km run through Oxford, which raises money for Muscular Dystrophy UK, is in its 39th year.

This year, as well as the usual main run and children's run, a third route spanning 10 miles will also be available to entrants.

Runners looking for a longer challenge will start earlier to loop around the river and cycle paths, before heading back to join the usual path through the city centre.

Participants range from professional athletes to joggers and fun runners, who pass historic buildings along the way.

Sign-ups have increased from 3,500 in 2015 to a planned 6,000 for this year’s event, which takes place on Sunday, May 3.

Muscular Dystrophy UK's race director Jessie Keighley said: "We are genuinely excited about extending our Town and Gown.

"There was a fantastic atmosphere last year when, in brilliant sunshine, our patron Gabby Logan fired the gun and started the races.

"Our hope is that the new race will appeal to those who have loved doing the 10k and want to extend their fundraising and involvement."

Last year's winner Joseph Smith recorded a personal best at 31.41 minutes.

He said: "As an experience, the Oxford Town and Gown is second to none.

"The atmosphere surrounding the race is amazing, everyone seemed so happy last year, despite the cold!

"Also, my credit to all the volunteers and organisers, everyone I came in contact with was so nice and helpful, and the event seemed to run very smoothly."

Registration for both the 10km run and 10 mile run is now open via race-nation.co.uk/register/town-and-gown-events.

Everyone registering for the 10-miler will be given a complimentary top as well as a bespoke medal, and get access to a VIP marquee.
